"Great beer selections, kid-friendly restaurant with peanut shells on the floor, very helpful friendly waitstaff. However, the food was really smack-you-in-the-face strong flavors! The ahi tuna wrap special wasabi sauce made me involuntarily cry and the mustard sauce for the pretzel was nearly equally strong. Pet Friendly Restaurant in Martha's Vineyard: $$ Seafood, Traditional American; "Full service, year-round waterfront dining in our legendary Tavern on Vineyard Haven Harbor. It was a desperately cold day in 1969. At that time, the Vineyard did not have a year-round restaurant, and Captain Robert Douglas’ repast that night was a bitter cup of coffee and a dry, packaged, store-bought donut. The Captain, unsatisfied by his “meal”, picked up a pencil and began sketching on a paper napkin... The end result was a restaurant that would look just right on the beach at the head of Vineyard Haven Harbor, a place where locals and visitors could meet and eat. Locals shared their recipes for pies, chowders, and soups. When the building was completed the Captain gave his restaurant a name in honor of his faithful canine companion Black Dog. Not much has changed from those early days. The view of Vineyard Haven Harbor is still as lovely as ever and the Tavern chefs continue to share their culinary creations with our customers. A delicious first or last stop by the ferry! Opened in 1973, the Water Street bakery took up residence in the former Vineyard Haven Firehouse as a solution to the Tavern’s dessert needs. The Bakery was also where the first Black Dog t-shirts were sold. The Tavern’s dessert demands quickly outgrew the small Bakery and soon production was moved to the Bakery Café on State Road. Not to worry: our freshly baked cookies, ginger snaps, pumpkin-cream cheese muffins, decadent desserts, and scones are just a few of the many sweet treats still available at the Bakery. On-the-go meal options include freshly made sandwiches like the “Chappy”, savory soups, clam chowder, and our famous Breakfast Woofer Sandwich.
